best ammo for hunting with a .44 mag revolver?
I recently bought a S&W 629-4 with an 8 3/8″ barrel, and I was wondering what your opinion is on the best ammo for hunting.
240 gr. for more knockdown power, or lighter for more velocity?
Hollow point for better expansion or soft point for better penetration?
What brand?
I’m thinking that in the future I may take up reloading, but for now I’m asking about the off the shelf stuff. Thanks.
“Best” round for a 44 mag, this will get you several different answers. From personal experience I can suggest the following to you. For game up to the size of white tail deer and the smaller hogs the 240 grain hollow points or soft points do a good job. For the larger hogs, ( 200+ lbs) large deer, elk, and bear I use the 300 grain weights. As for solid lead versus jacketed or full metal jacket that depends on what I’m hunting. Most white tail I use 240 JHP, for the large feral hogs I use the 300 gr partitions from Nosler. For the bears and bison I use 300 grain solids for the initial three rounds followed by a heavy FMJ for deep penetration.
If I were going to look at off the shelf ammo I would look at the federal brands then remington. I have shot some PMC and other ” cost saving” brands but have had problems with accuracy or case separations from some of these off brands. As you progress into loading your own you’ll find the two or three rounds that your individual pistols like.
Handgun hunting is a lot of fun and with some practice and a few good hunts to learn from will bring you a life time of excitement. Good luck and good hunting to you.
