How do you train an older horse to tie?
About a year ago I bought a filly that hadn’t really been messed with. Now, she’s 2 and a half, she leads, and lets me brush her, and stands for the farrier, all the basics, EXCEPT being tied! The one time I tried putting her in the cross ties, she pulled back and broke one of them, which made me nervous about trying it again. She’s still a little pushy, but I can usually make her stand still while I brush her…I just always hold the lead rope, instead of tying her up. Any tips on how to teach an older horse to tie? Keeping safety in mind, of course. I really want to get this problem solved ASAP, please help!
Bungee cords are NOT safe if your horse doesn’t tie well- they can snap and go into the horses face- I have seen eyes gouged by bungee cords that people put on horses not used to being tied.
Easy- find a stout pole she can not break, and tie her to it. She will fight it, probably a lot, but it is really the only way. She knows she can get out of crossties- she has broken them already. For safety’s sake, only tie her with one lead rope with very little slack to a pole that will not move, no matter how much she pulls on it. Let her fight it, she will probably rear up a bit, kick, and paw- just leave her there until her hissy fit is over. Once she calms down, tell her good girl and give her a treat. Then untie her and try it again another day, doing the same thing. Once she ties well to one pole for an extended period of time (up to 30min-1hr), you can move up to cross ties.
Cross ties are more dangerous (they can flip, etc) but tie her between two strong poles, close to each other for less lead slack. Make sure one rope is a safety release knot that you can pull quickly if she starts to flip. Give her treats, keeping her mind occupied as long as she stands still. If she starts to fidgit too much, discipline her (whatever works best for you and your horse) Let her know it is not acceptable.
Once horses accept tying to one pole without a problem, cross ties are usually not a big step farther.
