is it safe to fire buckshot from a shotgun with no stock?
I have a pump action shotgun for home defense purposes. It is the type that doesn’t have a stock or a recoil absorber, but just has something similar to a pistol grip. When I first got it, the dealer told me to only fire 7-1/2 bird shot because the recoil from the slightly heavier buck shot might cause injury to the person firing the gun. I was researching recently on the internet and everyone says that bird shot is not ideal for home defense. Is this really true? would it be dangerous to fire buck shot from it?
Forgot to mention It is a 12 gage Revelation R310AB.
It will be okay to shoot buckshot with a pistol grip shotgun. When it comes to recoil, it is the weight and speed of the projectiles that matters. Projectiles from a 2 3/4″ 12 gauge 00 buckshot containing 9 pellets weigh exactly 1 1/8oz and they usually travel down the barrel around 1250ft/s to 1300ft/s. There are many 2 3/4″ 12 gauge 1 1/8oz birdshots that have a muzzle velocity around 1250ft/s. You didn’t hear that many people complaining about nasty recoils from birdshots right? You will hear people complaining about turkey loads and slugs. But buckshots really aren’t that nasty when it comes to recoil (unless you are shooting 3″ shells containing fifteen 00 pellets).

You got some bad information on birdshot for home defense as well. Unless you got a huge house or you planned to chase someone down your yard, birdshots will be very effective. For home defense, you are usually looking at ranges within 15 yards. At very close range, birds shots don’t have enough distance to spread. As a result, most of the shots will hit the target and a lot of energy will be transfered to a rather small area of the intruder’s body. Penetration won’t matter that much because the shock alone is enough to put the light out on the intruder. If the range is a little further, birdshots will hit a larger area and the energy won’t be as concentrated. But it is still enough to decapacitate the intruder. Unless you will fire at targets well over 15 yards, birdshots will be enough.
